Still Sabotaging Your Own Happiness?


Trying to get the most from your life and ending up in the same place is very frustrating. Does it seem like you are a character playing the same role in the movie of your life over and over again? Hypnosis is just a different level of consciousness!

When one first hears the word Hypnosis, many images come to mind for most people up to and including images of an audience member in a stage show clucking like a chicken.  This is in fact stage hypnosis and rest assured that the person doing the clucking is doing so of his or her own free will.

There are many misconceptions about hypnosis such as:  I will be made to do something against my will, I will not remember what happened, I will tell you my deepest secrets or do something I am uncomfortable with, I have to be relaxed to be hypnotized, and I can not be hypnotized to name a few.  We are all being hypnotized on a daily basis.  If you have ever had the experience of driving in your car and arriving at your destination without remembering parts of the journey, you have been hypnotized.

In fact, if hypnosis (which is merely being open to the power of suggestion) weren’t so effective in our daily lives, we wouldn’t feel compelled to buy all the things and eat all of the bad foods advertisers sell us on the TV.  Truly, Hypnosis is just a different level of consciousness and has been used for many years to help with fears, phobias, pain, and anxiety to name of few not to mention that at the deepest level of consciousness it has actually been used on people undergoing surgery instead of using anesthesia.

Allergy Season Already?

Is it really allergy season again?  Allergies are a frustrating and draining (no pun intended) problem for people physically and emotionally.   Allergies begin (or worsen) over time based on our immune system.  After being exposed to a substance over time, the body reaches a threshold of tolerance to the offending substance resulting in a release of histamines, which cause symptoms such as itchy/watery eyes, congestion, fatigue, coughing, and sneezing.  People who have other physical (and even emotional) conditions often have worse allergy symptoms because the body’s immune system is already working hard to correct the other conditions.

It’s allergy season again, so what do I do?  Here are a few options:  1) Anti-histamine pills can work by blocking the symptoms and allergy shots or homeopathic remedies can work by slowly introducing an allergen to the body to allow it to stop reacting. 2) Another approach is Applied Kinesiology/Muscle Testing, which is a modern synthesis between western and eastern healing techniques.  Muscle strength is tested while touching specific areas of the body, which provides neurological information about energy blockages that can be fixed using non-invasive, gentle corrections.  This allows the body to heal itself and stop reacting to the offending allergen.

Practitioner Heal Thyself

We’ve all heard the expression, “Practitioner Heal Thyself”.  Have you ever had the experience of being on the receiving end of advice by someone that doesn’t practice what they preach?  One funny example comes from the movie, “All That Jazz”, with Roy Scheider playing the character of Bob Fosse, who was in real life a heavy smoker, drug and alcohol user.  When Roy Scheider sees his doctor for chest pain, the doctor who examines him is actually smoking and coughing while listening to his chest and gives him a clean bill of health.

I’m not saying that as practitioners or advice givers that we have to be issue free as almost everyone has experienced challenges in their life and truly, we are all works in progress.  What I’m suggesting is that those that give advice (whether as friends, family members, or practitioners in the healing arts) all really benefit from clearing our own issues to be clearer channels of energy for others.

A funny example from my own life involved a time when I entered into psychological counseling for help after a divorce.  I spent several months with the Psychologist, followed her advice, and was feeling great.  I told her it would be my last session unless I needed a tune up.  She looked at me and said, “You can’t leave.  You’re one of my only patients that actually listens and acts on my advice.”  Is anyone getting as uncomfortable as I was hearing that statement?  Clearly, she was looking to me to fill her self-esteem cup.  Many times, we look to others to validate us (something I have been guilty of many times) and if you are a healing practitioner, you can look at your client’s progress (or lack of progress) as your success or failure when really it has nothing to do with you.  As long as you are prepared and the best practitioner you can be, the rest is truly up to the client.  To this day, I have to remind myself that looking for validation outside myself instead of inside for my own personal connection with my belief systems always sends me off track.

When you really look at it, there is nothing more powerful than someone who has experienced difficulties and traumas but has worked through their issues, released their victimhood, and has used their experience to help others.  I’ll never forget a client that came to me for prenatal care years ago.  She was 40 years old and had been a serious drug addict in the past.  She wanted this child and was in the process of getting her other children back after being sober for 5 years.  She was such a great teacher as she taught me how to spot when clients were using drugs to help me guide them in a different direction.  I encouraged her to talk to drug addicted pregnant women, as hearing things from her would be much more powerful than hearing them from me.  She actually decided to be a counselor, and I’m sure she has helped many thousands of women to date.


Always remember that above all do no harm when you try to guide people through their healing journey.

Performing a Stellar Presentation


Have you ever been at a talk or conference and either fought falling asleep or watched the clock wondering when it would end?  We’ve all been there, and it isn’t pretty.  It also isn’t fun for a speaker to look out and see a sleepy or bored audience.  Here are some things I’ve learned or noticed that can make your presentation really successful and well received:

When I took a public speaking course in college, the instructor stressed the idea of audience analysis.  Every audience is different.  Are you speaking to a certain interest or age group?  Once you find out, it’s best to take the time to tailor the material to that audience by adding or removing items that the group may or may not want to hear.

Try to make eye contact with as many audience members as possible.  Even in a large group, it’s possible to reach everyone simply by your intention.  For example, how many concerts have you been to where you were in a large venue and seated up so high (in the “nose bleed” territory) but still felt moved by the performer?  This is related to the performer’s ability to reach that very last row and connect with as many people as possible.

Analyze what interests you about a talk you have attended or heard:  was it the person’s energy, enthusiasm, the message or all of the above?  Listen to the speeches of great speakers like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy, Mahatma Gandhi for example and emulate those aspects that made them so magnetic and interesting to you.

Watch your non-verbal communication.  Is your posture open or closed?  For example, are your arms crossed, shoulders tense, and/or nervous habits or ticks showing? I find the best way to know how you appear to an audience is to record yourself.  I remember the first time I performed in musical theater and watched the video of the performance.  I was horrified that I had the nervous habits of licking my lips a lot and splaying out my arms/hands like an airplane, not a pretty site but a valuable learning opportunity.  Once you know yourself and what you do, you can correct habits without being self-conscious about them.

Take a break in the presentation and get the audience moving by stretching or doing an activity.  The movement will increase oxygen to their brains to help them focus (and stay awake) for the next part of your presentation.

Now that you have more tools and have practiced your material, it’s time to go out there, have fun, and share your important message!

What is Total Body Modification or TBM?


“If the right thing is done to the right body at the right time in the right way, miracles happen.”

TBM believes that the body has the inherent ability to regenerate and heal itself and is based on the belief that all of the body’s functions are controlled by the brain (the body’s biological computer) and by the spinal nerves.  TBM teaches, as Oriental Medicine does, that too much or too little energy leads to pathology or disease.  In addition, TBM asserts that if the brain runs its body programs too fast or too slowly, too much or too little energy results leading to disease.  TBM works to normalize the flow of energy by balancing the body’s neural circuits.  Applied Kinesiology or Muscle Testing is used to find the various neural circuits that are not flowing properly.

Hat’s off to Stanford University

While practicing as a Women’s Health Care Nurse Practitioner and writing prescriptions in the 1990’s, Heather had a hunch that the Hormone Replacement Scandal would happen.  Hat’s off to Stanford University for bringing to light a very important subject about how our “scientific” studies are run just as Peter Jennings did in a piece on ABC News in 2002 called, “Bitter Medicine:  Pills, Profits, and the Public Health.”

Healing Solutions | Emotional Reprogramming

Every thought, word and action is processed by your brain. In western medicine, we truly only understand 10% of how the brain functions. We do know that the brain associates to create order and meaning. For example, if you’ve ever tensed up when someone you have never met before walks into the room but have had no idea why, your brain is likely associating that person with a previous experience: maybe they wear the same perfume or walk the same way as someone you don’t like.
