The holidays can be a wonderful time of year, but for many, it comes with a lot of obligations and stress. Even if you came from a healthy family background, many people experience more stress around the holidays. Those that come from less than ideal backgrounds and have created healthier lives for themselves, often feel like they fall into old patterns of communication when around their family of origin or old friends.
Here are some tips:
- Remember to ask for help. If the fear is that, “if I don’t do it, who will, or who will do it right”, walk yourself through the worse case scenario. If the worst case doesn’t involve trips to the hospital emergency room or death, is it really worth all of the stress?
- Having the strength to be who you truly are (the new healthier you) instead of fitting in with the old unhealthy patterns can be truly challenging. To help, you might decide to attend vs. host a family gathering. This way, you can participate and help others but are able to set limits on how much time you spend at the gathering. Also realize that by you being you and settings boundaries, it allows others to start treating you differently.
- If the stress becomes overwhelming, seeking professional help may be the answer. Traditional counseling, life coaching, or Applied Kinesiology (Muscle Testing), and/or Hypnosis can help you change the stress response into a relaxation response to allow you to really enjoy the season! Seasons Greetings!
